The town has co-ordinates 26.68°N 85.17°E with an average elevation of about 55 meters or 180 feet. According to the 2011 census the town has a population of about 32,618 people. The languages spoken in the town are Maithili and Hindi. The boundary of the town touches Nepal, Sitamari and Sheohara.
